Understanding Early Intervention And EIBI

Understanding Early Intervention And EIBI

At The Little Co, we specialise in Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI) a therapy approach designed to give young autistic children and children with developmental delays the strongest possible foundation for future learning, independence, and wellbeing.

EIBI is a type of early intervention, but it’s more focused, more structured, and more intensive than general early childhood therapies. It’s based on the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and supports children in building meaningful skills through fun, individualised learning experiences.

Families may choose to access EIBI when they want to increase their child’s learning opportunities throughout the day using fun, play-based support that’s tailored to their child’s strengths. EIBI provides a structured and evidence-based way to build skills like communication, independence, and social connection, with a clear plan that’s focused on making meaningful progress in real-life situations.

If you’re new to these terms, don’t worry, we’ve broken them down simply below so you can feel confident understanding what EIBI is, how it fits under early intervention, and whether it’s the right fit for your child.

What Is Early Intervention?

Early intervention (EI) refers to any type of therapy or support offered to young children (typically from birth to age 9) who are experiencing delays in their development. These delays could be in areas like speech, motor skills, behaviour, social connection, or learning.

Early intervention might include:

  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Behaviour therapy
  • Psychology
  • Support from educators or early childhood specialists

These services are often provided at a lower intensity (e.g., 1–5 hours per week), and may take place in the home, childcare, or the community.

What Is Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI)?

EIBI is a specific, evidence-based approach for young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It uses the principles of ABA to teach essential life skills such as:

  • Communication and language
  • Play and social interaction
  • Independence with daily routines
  • Emotional regulation
  • Learning how to learn

EIBI is:

  • Individualised: every program is tailored to your child
  • Intensive: typically 11–40 hours per week
  • Goal-focused: we break big skills into small, achievable steps
  • Playful and engaging: sessions happen in both structured and natural environments, including home and community settings

At The Little Co, all EIBI programs are designed and overseen by qualified Behaviour Analysts and delivered by trained therapists who know how to connect with your child’s interests and learning style.

EIBI can also be delivered alongside other early intervention therapies like speech or occupational therapy, to ensure a collaborative, well-rounded approach that supports your child’s development across all areas.

EIBI vs Early Intervention

How Are Early Intervention & EIBI Similar?

Whether you’re receiving EIBI or another type of early intervention, both approaches:

  • Support your child’s development in key areas
  • Involve families in the process
  • Are based on evidence and best practice
  • Aim to help your child reach their full potential

NDIS And Early Intervention

Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), children under 9 years old can access funding through the Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) pathway. This allows families to access support services such as:

  • Early intervention therapies
  • Behaviour support
  • Parent training
  • Goal-based programs

EIBI may be funded through your child’s NDIS plan under categories like Improved Daily Living or Core Supports, depending on your child’s needs and goals.

If you’re not sure whether EIBI is included in your child’s plan, we’re happy to help you navigate the options and speak with your support coordinator or planner.

Not Sure Where to Start?
