Toilet Training FAQs

When should I start toilet training? What age is best?

There’s no one-size-fits-all age, but most kids are ready somewhere between 2 and 4. The key is looking for signs of readiness, like staying dry for short periods, showing interest in the toilet, or noticing when they’ve done a wee or poo. It’s less about age, and more about timing for your child.

Getting started doesn’t mean jumping straight into using the toilet, it can begin with simply exploring the idea. You can use books, videos, or role play to introduce what toilet time looks like and observe your child’s reactions. This helps you tune into their interest and comfort levels, and gives you a chance to spot what areas might need support. Spending some time tracking periods your child is releasing and when they are dry is also another way to understand if your child is ready or not.

How long does it take?

It really depends on the child. Some pick it up in a few days, others take a few weeks or longer, and that’s okay! We focus on progress, not perfection. What matters most is having a plan that suits your child and sticking with it.

There are also a number of different factors that can affect how long the process takes and it’s not just about releasing on the toilet. The transition to the toilet, the motor planning skills required, your child’s communication abilities, and any sensory needs all play a big part too. These need to be considered when planning and supporting the process.

Should I toilet train at night too?

Not necessarily! Day training and night training are actually two different skills. Most kids get the hang of daytime first, and night dryness often comes later (sometimes much later). We usually recommend starting with daytime, and looking at night training separately once the day’s under control.

Tips to get Started:

  • Keep it positive and pressure-free – bring some of their favorite toys with them, add in some fun materials like stickers, fidgets, to make the toilet a fun place.
  • Spend time just helping your child become familiar with the toilet before any expectations.
  • Let your child watch others and learn, books, videos, real life, practice in play with dolls
  • Use visuals and consistent routines when going to the toilet and using the toilet
  • Praise effort, not just success
  • Accidents happen, it’s all part of learning!

What’s involved in the 6-week Toilet Training Success Program?

Our 6-week program is all about setting you and your child up for real success with a plan that’s tailored, practical, and actually doable. We know every child is different, so we take the time to understand what’s going on for your little one and what might be getting in the way.

Here’s how it works:

  • We start with a one-on-one assessment with you and your child so we can really get to know them, their developmental stage, communication style, sensory needs, and more.
  • From there, we put together a personalised plan that makes sense for your family.
  • You’ll get weekly coaching sessions (in-person, virtual, or in-clinic, whatever works for you) to keep things moving forward, make adjustments, and troubleshoot anything tricky that comes up.
  • We’ll help you track what’s working, change things if needed, and stay focused on progress.
  • Plus, you’ll have access to handy visuals, social stories, and routine templates to make things easier at home.
  • And throughout the 6 weeks, you’ve got us in your corner, phone and email support included.
