ABA Services FAQs

Where does ABA therapy take place?

At The Little Co, we offer ABA therapy sessions in the places that matter most to your child’s everyday life at home, in educational settings like kinder or school, or out in the community. This flexible, real-world approach helps your child build meaningful skills where they’ll actually use them.

  • Home-based sessions are ideal for working on daily living skills like getting dressed, brushing teeth, using the toilet, or managing routines. Learning in a familiar environment helps children feel safe, reduces transitions, and supports stronger carryover of skills.
  • Educational settings, such as kinder or school, allow us to support your child where social learning happens. We can help with transitions, following instructions, peer interactions, and working alongside educators to build consistency.
  • Community-based sessions are tailored to your child’s goals—whether it’s going to the shops, attending an activity, or managing new environments. These sessions are all about generalising skills and building independence out in the world.

We also offer telehealth or phone consultation options when in-person sessions aren’t suitable or when families need additional flexibility.

Wherever therapy takes place, your child’s individual needs, goals, and strengths guide the process and we welcome parents and caregivers to be involved as much as they’d like.

Can I be involved in my child’s ABA sessions?

Yes, absolutely. At The Little Co, we believe parents and caregivers play a vital role in their child’s progress, and we welcome your involvement in sessions as much as you feel comfortable.

Whether we’re working with your child at home, in the community, or at kinder or school, we’ll always aim to include you in ways that feel supportive and empowering. This might look like observing sessions, learning how to use strategies at home, or joining regular check-ins with your Behaviour Analyst to discuss progress and next steps.

Our goal is to give you practical tools and a deeper understanding of your child’s learning, so you feel confident supporting them outside of sessions too. You’re not just part of the process, you’re a key partner in it.

How do I get started with ABA therapy at The Little Co?

You can reach out to us by phone, email, enquiry form, or by booking a consultation online.

We begin with a free information consultation, where we take the time to learn more about your child, their needs, and what you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll also walk you through how our programs work and answer any questions you might have.

From there, we’ll organise a no-cost initial home visit with a Behaviour Analyst. This visit is a chance for us to meet your child in their own environment, build rapport, and get a clearer picture of how we can support them. It’s also a great opportunity for you to see how we work and ask any follow-up questions.

Following this visit, the Behaviour Analyst will make a recommendation around the type and number of therapy hours that would best support your child’s goals. Together, we’ll discuss options and design a program that fits your child’s needs, your family schedule, and what feels right for you.

We’re here to guide you through every step of the process and to make it as smooth and collaborative as possible.

How many hours of ABA therapy does my child need?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, every child is different. Most children benefit from 10 to 40 hours per week depending on their individual needs, developmental goals, and what’s manageable for your family. At The Little Co, we tailor our recommendations based on current research, a comprehensive assessment, and a collaborative conversation with you.

Some children may benefit from 2–10 hours per week, especially if they have more targeted goals, are transitioning out of higher-intensity support, or are receiving other therapies like speech or OT. This lower intensity may also suit families seeking a parent-coaching model, or when the focus is on maintaining skills, building independence, or preparing for transitions like starting school.

What matters most is not just the number of hours, but the quality, consistency, and individualisation of the support your child receives.

What happens in an initial ABA assessment?

The initial ABA assessment is an important step in understanding your child’s strengths, challenges, and support needs. It helps us create a therapy program that’s meaningful, individualised, and aligned with your family’s goals.

At The Little Co, this process begins with a home visit from a Behaviour Analyst, who will run the full assessment and guide you through every step. The assessment is typically completed over 4 to 8 hours of session time, depending on your child and the areas we’re focusing on.

During the initial sessions, we will:

    • Chat with you about your child’s needs, your priorities, and any behaviours of concern
    • Observe your child in familiar routines and during play or interaction with family members
    • Complete a parent questionnaire to better understand your child’s history, strengths, and goals
    • Begin identifying early therapy goals and suitable program structure

The Little Co uses a range of evidence-based assessments, including:

  • Skills assessments (e.g. communication, daily living, social and play skills)
  • Functional assessments to understand the purpose behind certain behaviours
  • Behaviour assessments to guide Positive Behaviour Support strategies

We’ll decide which assessment tools are most appropriate during your initial session, based on your child’s age, developmental profile, and presenting needs.

Once all the information is gathered, your Behaviour Analyst will develop a comprehensive therapy plan with recommended support hours and goals. We’ll then meet with you to review the plan and ensure it fits your family’s routine and priorities.

How are Behaviour Therapists and Behaviour Analysts different?

Behaviour Analysts and Behaviour Therapists work together as a team to deliver consistent, high-quality support for your child, but they have different levels of training and responsibilities.

A Behaviour Analyst is a Masters-level professional (such as a BCBA or CBA) with advanced training in behaviour science. They conduct assessments, design individualised support plans, set meaningful goals, monitor progress, and ensure all strategies are evidence-based, ethical, and tailored to your child. They also collaborate with families and other professionals to create consistent, effective support across settings.

A Behaviour Therapist (also known as an ABA Therapist or Technician) works under the supervision of a Behaviour Analyst to deliver the therapy program. They work directly with your child during sessions, helping them build new skills, practise routines, and respond to everyday challenges using positive behaviour support strategies.

At The Little Co, our Behaviour Analysts and Behaviour Therapists collaborate closely to ensure every aspect of your child’s program is delivered with care, clarity, and consistency.

How is an ABA Therapist different from a Support Worker?

ABA Therapists are trained to deliver therapy under the supervision of a Behaviour Analyst. Their work is structured, goal-oriented, and based on individualised programs designed by the Behaviour Analyst to teach skills, reduce barriers, and promote independence.

In contrast, Support Workers may assist with everyday routines or community access but don’t typically deliver structured therapeutic teaching or work from a clinical program.
