Parent and Caregiver Support FAQs
Will this replace my child’s therapy?
ESDM combines the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with developmental and relationship-based approaches, offering a play-based and child-led framework that’s engaging, respectful, and tailored to early learners.
Not at all. Parent and caregiver support is designed to complement your child’s therapy, not replace it.
These sessions are focused on helping you feel more confident and equipped to support your child in everyday moments, using strategies that align with their therapy goals. You’ll learn practical tools, get personalized coaching, and have a space to troubleshoot challenges as they come up.
Whether your child is currently in therapy or waiting to begin, parent support can make a big difference in how progress carries over into home and community life. It’s about building your skills, creating consistency, and making sure the whole family is supported along the way.
Is this service available online?
Yes, we offer flexible online options to support families no matter where you’re located or what your schedule looks like.
Parent and caregiver support, Positive Behaviour Support consultations, and some therapy planning sessions can all be delivered via telehealth or phone. This can be a great option if you’re outside of our service area, need more flexibility, or prefer the comfort of home.
We’ll work with you to figure out the best format based on your child’s goals and your preferences whether that’s online, in-person, or a mix of both.
What’s the difference between parent coaching and family therapy?
Parent coaching and family therapy can both be incredibly valuable but they have different purposes.
Parent coaching is practical and goal-focused. It’s about giving you strategies and tools to support your child’s development, manage behaviour, and build skills in everyday routines. Sessions are guided by a Behaviour Analyst and tailored to your family’s needs whether it’s managing tricky moments, setting up routines, or learning how to respond in ways that support your child’s growth. It’s collaborative, hands-on, and based on what’s happening in real life.
Family therapy, on the other hand, is typically delivered by a psychologist or mental health professional. It focuses more on the emotional dynamics between family members, relationships, communication patterns, and mental wellbeing.
At The Little Co, our parent coaching services are all about empowering you with evidence-based strategies and support that make a difference in day-to-day life.
Who is parent support and training for?
This service is for parents, carers, and families who want practical, evidence-based strategies to better support their child whether they’re currently receiving one to one therapy or not.
It’s especially helpful if you’re navigating tricky behaviours, struggling with routines, or just want to feel more confident and supported in your parenting. We work with families of neurodivergent children, and all support is tailored to your child’s individual strengths and needs.
What topics can you help with in parent training?
Parent sessions can cover a wide range of topics based on your goals. Common areas include:
- Understanding behaviour and regulation
- Managing meltdowns and big feelings
- Building routines like sleep, mealtime, or getting dressed
- Encouraging communication and play
- School or kinder transitions
- Toilet Training
- Promoting independence and flexibility
- Focused practiced using therapist skills
If you’re not sure where to start, we’ll help you identify your priorities and build a support plan from there.
Parent support and training can follow a specific framework or curriculum based on your needs or it can take a more flexible, goal-driven approach. It all depends on how you learn best and what feels most useful for your family. We’ll always work with you to find a style and pace that fits.
How is this different from regular therapy sessions?
While therapy focuses directly on your child, our parent support sessions are designed for you.
We help you build skills, troubleshoot challenges, and apply strategies that work in your everyday routines. These sessions are collaborative, practical, and grounded in real life no jargon, just tools that make sense for your family.
Can I access this service without ongoing therapy?
Absolutely. You don’t need to be receiving therapy from The Little Co to book parent support and training sessions. Whether you’re on a waitlist, in between services, or simply looking for guidance, we’re here to help.
We can also work alongside other professionals you’re already connected with to keep things consistent and collaborative.
Sessions can take place at home during the times you need it most or online for flexible scheduling options.
